Lots to tell you about since my last post. We have been camping almost every night since we left Aunt Viola’s house so I haven’t been able to update everyone as often as I’d like. The first day we left Corvallis and headed up towards Portland so we could see the Columbia River. It is the biggest river I have ever seen. I don’t even think I could swim across it.
We drove up the historic Old Columbia River Highway and then crossed over into Washington into the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. We then drove east along the river to eastern Washington. There we no campsites available (it was a Friday evening…), so we stayed at a Motel 6 in northeast Oregon. I like Motel 6 because they love dogs and dogs can stay in all their motels. And I got my dinner on time!!!
Saturday was another big day. I got to go swimming in the Columbia River. Did I mention before that I love swimming in rivers. But it didn’t have any rocks in it. What good is a river without rocks? Roger found a few rocks and threw them in for me to dig at though so it wasn’t a total loss. We then continued on our trip. We ended up in the Kootenai National Forest in western Montana. That made for a 4-state day!!! We traveled in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. It was a long day in the van though.
One thing I really like about traveling are the drive-thru coffee huts that Roger stops and gets his morning coffee at sometimes. The girls who work at them all seem to love dogs and they all have dog treats! I know that when we pull up to one now, that I need to position myself next to Roger so they see me and give me treats. I don’t think I am going to like it anymore when Roger makes his own coffee in the morning…
On Sunday, we drove up to Glacier National Park and went for a long walk in the Fish Creek Campground. I found a great stick and snuck it into the van because Roger said we weren’t supposed to take things from national parks. I hope the park service rangers don’t find out because I don’t want them to think I am a bad dog…but it was such a great stick. We couldn’t drive through the whole park because there was a bad fire so we just kept heading east. We spent the night in Havre, MT at the fairgrounds campground. It rained and thundered really hard and I kept barking at the thunder because I don’t like it.
Monday was the day Roger was really excited about because we would finally get to North Dakota, where he grew up. On our way though, we drove by Fort Peck Dam in eastern Montana. I got to go for a long walk off-leash along the lake and in the tall grass. It was great fun running in the grass.
After we got to North Dakota, we headed south to Medora and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It rained and the wind blew really hard as we drove but everything settled down once we found a campsite.
Tuesday we drove through the park and I got to see two new animals that I haven’t seen before. The first were prairie dogs…there were hundreds of them in this field and I could have spent hours chasing them. They looked just like squirrels and I love chasing squirrels!!! As you can see from the photo, I had a hard time paying attention to Roger and he wouldn’t let go of my leash when he took the photo because he was afraid I would run away after them (and I would have).
Next I saw a bison. It was huge! I barked really hard at one and I don’t think he liked it as he gave me a nasty look. We then headed north and then east, finally stopping in Bismarck for the night.
Well, have to run for today. I will update you about our stay in Bismarck and more in a few days.
Simon
